After trading down with Buffalo, the Bears had to wait until the 42nd pick to make their
s first selection, Danieal Manning, who can play cornerback or safety but will need to make the step up in competition from
Division II Abilene Christian. Devin Hester is a tremendous athlete who excels at returning kicks, but will need to find his place at wide receiver or cornerback. Dusty Dvoracek has struggled some off the field, but gives good effort and is competitive on game day. Jamar Williams can play any of the linebacker positions. Mark Anderson impressed in the athletic drills at the NFL Combine, but surprisingly slid all the way to the fifth round. Athletic J.D. Runnels will push for the backup job at fullback. Tyler Reed will need to spend his rookie season on the practice squad. There was no help added at tight end, the Bears' primary need position on offense.

| The Bears count the turnaround from 5-11 to 11-5 division champions incomplete. The season ended with a playoff loss to Carolina, and revealed some cracks that were more easily covered during the regular season.
But the Bears do have a few things the other NFC North clubs don't the division crown and continuity. All 22 regular starters plus 2005 top draft picks Cedric Benson and Mark Bradley, neither of whom contributed as heavily as expected during their rookie seasons because of injury return, and the
Bears suffered only minimal personnel losses in the offseason.
A dominant defense that sent five starters to the Pro Bowl in 2005 and finished second overall behind Tampa Bay returns intact to attack a division with a new cast of starting quarterbacks and head coaches. |
