The Browns' 2005 season ended in turmoil, with then-president John Collins trying to push out general manager Phil Savage. Collins' power play failed, and he tendered his resignation. The events that followed in the offseason could prove that owner Randy right executive. With ample salary-cap space and Lerner's deep pockets, Savage struck early and often in free I agency. Among the most notable sign-! ings: C LeCharles Bentley (six years, $36 million), OLT Kevin Shatter (seven years, $35 million), WR Joe Jurevicius (four years, $10 million), NT Ted Washington and OLB Willie McGinest. On paper, the Browns look much I improved from a season ago, when I head coach Romeo Crennel's team didn't have the personnel to compete in the AFC North. If former top draft picks Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow can be play-making threats after suffering serious knee injuries, the Browns may have reason to believe they can play with any team in the division.
Year Two of the Crennel and Savage Era starts with considerably more optimism and stability than the inaugural run in 2005.

Browns NFL 2006 Draft:

The Browns have needed help at linebacker for years and the position was addressed early and often in this draft. Kamerion Wimbley excels as an outside pass rusher, but his productivity numbers at Florida State are not those of a mid-first-round selection. This was a selection based on potential. Wimbley is not a sure thing and could be the biggest boom-or-bust pick of Round One. D'Qwell Jackson was the top inside linebacker in the draft. Leon Williams impresses as an athlete, but did nothing to excite on game days at the college level. Travis Wilson has size and speed, but struggled with injuries and play from the quarterback position as a senior. Isaac Sowells is an underrated Big Ten lineman who played left tackle at Indiana. Jerome Harrison is coming off an outstanding senior season and will likely bump Lee Suggs or William Green from the final roster. DeMario Minter is an experienced SEC corner who will improve the secondary depth in Cleveland. Versatile Lawrence Vickers should stick as the backup fullback. Babatunde Oshinowo excels as an inside run-stopper and will be groomed to replace Ted Washington. Justin Hamilton will likely spend the year on the practice squad.
