Buoyed by a precocious group of talented rookies, the Buccaneers steered their ship back to the playoffs in 2005 their first postseason berth since winning Super Bowl XXXVII. The Buccaneers returned to the
playoffs using a different philosophy: Trust the rookies. Head coach Jon Gruden had developed a reputation for relying on veteran players, and the Buccaneers have
become well-known for their lavish free-agent spending in recent years. But another year in salary-cap trouble forced the Buccaneers to take a different approach.
Gruden used three rookie starters on offense OLG Dan Buenning, TE Alex Smith and RB Cadillac Williams for most of the season, and he got contributions from others off the bench. The rookies, along with a first-time starting quarterback in Chris Simms, guided the Buccaneers to the MFC South title.
Blending youth with a slew of aging stars will again be the formula Gruden uses as the Buccaneers try to defend their division crown.

| The Buccaneers focused in the offseason on upgrading the offensive line, and the trend continued on draft day with the selections of guard Davin Joseph and tackle Jeremy III Trueblood in the first two rounds. Joseph is athletic and tough with the ability to
start as a rookie. Trueblood has great size, but gets beat sometimes by playing too tall. Maurice Stovall impressed as a senior at Notre Dame and provides Chris Simms with another target outside. Alan Zemaitis was a standout in the Big Ten and will fit well in the Tampa style of defense. Julian Jenkins is a 'tweener who was most effective as a defensive end at Stanford. Bruce Gradkowski isn't flashy, but was always a winner as a MAC quarterback at Toledo. T.J. Williams and Tim Massaquoi will compete for the backup jobs behind tight end Alex Smith. Their presence will put pressure • on Anthony Becht. Justin Phinisee is a corner/ safety 'tweener who lacks pure speed. Charles Bennett is a DE/OLB 'tweener who excels rushing the passer. There are five potential starters in this draft for the Bucs.
