After the Cardinals changed their tune and became big spenders, adding the best free agent money could buy this offseason in two-time league-leading rusher Edgerrin James, the odds for a successful season in the desert skyrocketed.
James fills a major need the Cardinals had only two rushing IDs in 2005 and rushed for 100 yards as a team only once and his signing amplified the buzz already in place with a
sparkling new state-of-the-art stadiumset to open in Glendale this summer. James is widely considered the missing link for the only team in the league to finish in the top 10 in both offense and defense last season (eighth in both cases), and head coach Dennis Green could be in big trouble if the Cardinals don't show major improvement in his third season at the helm. |
Cardinals NFL 2006 Draft: |
| No one expected Matt Leinart to drop to No. 10 overall and it did not take long for the Cardinals to select the former Heisman Trophy winner. Given the injury history of Kurt Warner, look for Leinart to move in as a starter at some point this season. Deuce Lutui played guard and tackle for Southern Cal and should be a valued swingman in Arizona. Leonard Pope has first-round ability, but concerns regarding his 6-8 frame and ability to pick up complex offensive schemes dropped him into the third round. Gabe Watson was considered an inconsistent under-achiever at Michigan, which led to his fourth-round slide. Louisville outside linebacker Brandon Johnson is a better athlete than football player. Jonathan Lewis is an underrated lineman who should push Darnell Dockett for playing time. Todd Watkins brings outstanding speed to an already-strong lineup of receivers in Arizona. This was a solid draft from top to bottom that filled needs with quality prospects |
