Change has been in the air for much of the last year in Kansas City. First, it was the defensive overhaul last offseason that included opening up the checkbook for LB Kendrell Bell, S Sammy Knight and CB Patrick Surtain and the drafting of LB Derrick Johnson. Then, it was the coming-out party for RB Larry Johnson, who posted unheard of numbers from mid- , season on in place of the injured Priest Holmes. And lastly, after weeks of speculation that had him pegged to leave for Kansas City, where he has many ties, Herman Edwards was acquired from the Jets to take over for the retired Dick Vermeil.
Edwards steps into a much prettier situation than the one he left behind in New York. The Chiefs have plenty of talent, but could see their window of opportunity closing with an aging roster that has missed the playoffs the last two seasons.
Although highly regarded offensive coordinator Al Saunders left for Washington, Edwards kept most of the offensive coaching staff on board to tend to what has been one of the league's best and most productive units over the past several years.
Defensively, despite some improvements last season, especially against the run and in terms of points allowed, the Chiefs still have a lot of work to do to get back into the postseason mix.

Chiefs NFL 2006 Draft:

.With a pressing need at cornerback, the Chiefs surprisingly waited until the fifth round to add Marcus Maxey, an athletic career , backup at Miami. In the first round, Kansas City selected Tamba Mali. The Penn State pass rusher was expected to fall until the
mid-second round after poor workouts prior to the draft. The recent history of Nittany Lion linemen failing on the next level is a significant concern. Bernard Pollard has size and athletic ability, but there were concerns regarding his coachability. Brodie Croyle was added in the third round to be groomed to replace Trent Green. Tackle/guard Tre Stallings will struggle making the final roster. Athletic Jeff Webb comes from a San Diego State program that has produced NFL receivers, but must learn to put the team first. Jarrad Page has size and athletic ability, but may need to spend his rookie season on the practice squad. This could be the worst draft of any team this year, as little or no help at cornerback was added.
