The Dolphins made great strides in Nick Saban's first year as head coach. After bottoming out at 3-7 following a 22-0 loss at Cleveland in Week 11, the team caught fire, winning six straight games to close out the season.
Saban moved quickly after last year's coordinators departed by hiring former head coaches Mike Mularkey (offense) and Dom Capers (defense). But the offseason move that will likely determine how quickly the Dolphins ascend to the ranks of the NFL elite is the trade for three-time Pro Bowl QB Daunte Culpepper.
Saban has established confidence and continuity, he strengthened the coaching staff and he acquired a franchise-type quarterback.

Dolphins NFL 2006 Draft: |
| The Dolphins have been focused on upgrading the secondary this offseason and it continued in the draft with the selection of Jason Alien. Alien is a top-notch athlete who can be tried initially at cornerback but will eventually settle into one of the safety positions. The second-round pick was sent to Minnesota for quarterback Daunte Culpepper. Derek Hagan was an extremely productive receiver at Arizona State but dropped to the third round after showing inconsistent hands at the Senior Bowl. Joe Toledo, a former tight end, played just one season of tackle at Washington. With age starting to become a concern along their defensive line, the Dolphins added Fred Evans and Rodrique Wright in the final round. Evans was a Division I-AA standout, while Wright slipped some due to a rotator-cuff injury uncovered in medical tests at the Combine. Devin Aromashodu has size and speed and could develop into a solid No. 3 receiver. Factoring in the Culpepper trade, this was a solid draft and will help the team make a significant step up in the standings. |
