The 2005 season was a weird mix of elation and disappointment. A year after ending a bad season on a high, the Giants finished a good '05 campaign, in which they won the NFC East, breaking the Eagles' four-year stranglehold, on a very low note — in a 23-0 home loss to Carolina. The playoff loss highlighted some of the team's weaknesses: namely, lack of depth and talent on defense and
inconsistency in the passing game. But there's hope the problems can be addressed. The defense, namely the secondary, received an overhaul in the offseason, and QB Eli Manning is expected to make further improvements in what will be only his second full season at the helm.
Does that translate to more progress? The Giants hope to build on their 11-win season, but they must contend with a stronger division and the serious doubts that were raised in the loss to the Panthers. |
Giants NFL 2006 Draft: |
| After signing LaVar Arrington to fill their
biggest need just prior to the draft, the Giants
could have gone a number of different directions in Round One. They ended up surprising most with the selection of Mathias
Kiwanuka. Although he put up big numbers
at Boston College, he will need to add strength, work on position technique and add a few secondary pass-rush moves. What made his selection most surprising was the depth the team already had at defensive end with Michael Strahan, Osi Umenyiora and Justin Tuck. Eli Manning will be happy with the addition of Sinorice Moss at receiver. Gerris Wilkinson can play any of the linebacker positions and could be used to push aging Carlos Emmons. Barry Cofield was one of the top sleepers and will push defensive tackle Fred Robbins for playing time. Guy Whimper is a top athlete, but played just one season at offensive tackle. Charlie Peprah has experience at safety and cornerback and will provide quality depth. Gerrick McPhearson has great speed, but needs work as a defensive back.
