Matt Millen hopes the third time is the charm.
Millen hired Rod Marinelli, the third head coach in Millen's reign, hoping to reverse the fortunes of a franchise that hasn't been to the playoffs since 1999. The militaristic Marinelli promises a disciplined team, but does he have the talent to get the results?
Mike Martz was hired to lead a very talented, young offense. His system is
in stark contrast to the impotent version of the West Coast offense that former coach Steve Mariucci employed.
In a division with three new head coaches, an explosive offense could be the right way to start a turnaround. |

| After signing Jon Kitna and Josh McCown in , free agency, the Lions passed on Matt Leinart V and selected outside linebacker Ernie Sims. He fits into the Tampa-2 scheme extremely well, but must overcome a history of concussions. Daniel Bullocks was a second-round selection, like his brother, Josh, last year with the Saints, and will backup strong safety Kenoy ; Kennedy. Brian Calhoun was a solid talent to pick up in the third round, but halfback was not a position of urgent need for the Lions. Jonathan Scott was considered a first-round talent, but failed to impress at his workout, dropped in the weeks leading up to the draft ; and fell all the way to the fifth round. He could turn out to be a steal and the replacement for Jeff Backus at left tackle. Dee McCann is a physical corner who replaced Adam Jones (Titans) at West Virginia. Fred Matua, a standout on the Southern Cal offensive line, surprisingly lasted until the final round. Anthony Cannon was a productive linebacker at Tulane, but will need to impress on special teams to make the final roster. The second-day selections will definitely impact Detroit down the road. |
