Expectations were just set too high for a Raiders offense that, on paper, looked like one of the most explosive the league had to offer. Set too high to finish 21st in yards and 23rd in points scored. And too high, in the end, for Norv Turner to keep his job.
After a long and deliberate coaching search that saw top options like Louisville's Bobby Petrino and Steelers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt shoot down their overtures, the Raiders turned to Art Shell, who had been out of coaching since the 2000 season. Owner Al Davis had long regretted firing Shell a Hall of Fame offensive lineman and two-time Super Bowl champion with the Silver & Black after the 1994 season. The Raiders have have finished .500 or worse eight times since Shell's departure and have won only 13 games the past three years.
Plenty of pressure will be on new QB Aaron Brooks to give the offense a shot in the arm. His mobility will be a key. Pressure will also fall on the shoulders of WR Randy Moss, who is coming off the worst 16-game season of his career. Defensively, the Raiders got the most out of free-agent DE Derrick Burgess, but they cut ties this spring with CB Charles Woodson and could use some more playmakers. |

| With an obvious need at safety, the Raiders used two of their first four picks at the position. , Michael Huff was added in the first, while
Darnel Bing was chosen in the fourth. The selection of Huff was a bit of a surprise, as
the team passed on Matt Leinart. Bing was considered an early-second-round prospect, but slipped all the way to the fourth. Athletic outside linebacker Thomas Howard was added in the second round and could start as a rookie. Paul McQuistan is an athletic tackle who will back up Barry Sims. Kevin Boothe is a mauler who can play right guard or tackle. Chris Morris will back up center Jake Grove. Maine wideout Kevin McMahan was the 2006 Mr. Irrelevant as the last player chosen. Overall, a solid draft. |
