It's easy to forget now, but the Steelers were the last AFC team to make the playoffs. In the wild-card round, they traveled to Cincinnati to play the Bengals, who scored 38 points on Pittsburgh's vaunted defense in the last meeting between the teams. On Cincinnati's first offensive play, Bengals QB Carson Palmer hit WR Chris Henry for 66 yards. The Bengals looked poised to again get the best of Pittsburgh's secondary. But Palmer suffered a serious knee injury on the play, and the Steelers eventually found their bearings and wore down the Bengals.
In the divisional round, defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau rattled Colts QB Peyton Manning and the , Steelers beat top-seeded Indianapo lis. The Steelers followed that with a rout of the Broncos in the AFC title game.
Then came the Steelers' first Super Bowl triumph in 26 years, a 21-10 win over Seattle.
The Steelers lost three starters from the championship team to free agency: WR Antwaan Randle El, DE Kimo von Oelhoffen and FS Chris Hope. Still, with the core of the tearr returning, Pittsburgh is the favorite t capture the AFC North title.

Steelers NFL 2006 Draft:

After losing Antwaan Handle El in free agency, the Steelers were looking to add a playmaker opposite Mines Ward. So, they traded up in the first round to select the draft's top receiver in Ohio State's Santonio
Holmes. Anthony Smith made numerous big plays for Syracuse last season and will help ease the loss of free safety Chris Hope. Willie Reid has experience at wide receiver and halfback, but really excels as a return man. Willie Colon is an athletic widebody who can provide depth at tackle or guard. Orien Harris will help ease the loss of Kimo von Oelhoffen in free agency. Omar Jacobs was very productive at Bowling Green, but concerns over his release and mechanics dropped him to the fifth round. Charles Davis is a former basketball player who will provide depth behind tight end Heath Miller. Marvin Philip can be groomed to replace center Jeff Hartings. Cedric Humes is the kind of big back the Steelers like and has the versatility to play halfback or fullback. Drafting so late in each round, the Steelers did well in addressing need with talent.
